Question 09

What does SWL mean and how is it verified?

SWL (Safe Working Load) refers to the maximum load that a lifting tool or tackle can safely handle under normal working conditions. It is an important safety parameter used to prevent overloading during lifting operations.

In the Indian context, SWL markings are typically provided by the manufacturer on lifting equipment such as slings, shackles, hooks, chains, and other rigging accessories. These markings may appear on identification tags, stamped markings, or attached plates indicating the allowable load capacity.

During inspection, Uniquo verifies that the SWL marking is clearly visible, legible, and appropriate for the intended lifting application. We also check that the lifting tool is being used within its rated capacity and that the equipment configuration—such as sling angles or multi-leg lifting arrangements—does not exceed the safe load limits.

At Uniquo, SWL verification is a critical part of our inspection process to help prevent overloading, reduce lifting risks, and ensure safe material handling operations across Indian construction and industrial sites.
