Question 07

Can NDT replace internal inspection of pressure vessels?

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a valuable tool for assessing the condition of pressure vessels, but it does not fully replace internal inspection. Instead, both approaches are used together to ensure complete and reliable evaluation of vessel integrity.

In India, pressure vessel safety is governed by the Factories Act, 1948 and applicable state factory rules, which often require periodic internal inspection along with other testing methods depending on risk and usage.

NDT methods such as ultrasonic testing, radiography, dye penetrant testing, and magnetic particle inspection help detect:

  • Internal cracks and flaws without opening the vessel
  • Wall thickness loss due to corrosion or erosion
  • Weld defects and structural inconsistencies
  • However, internal inspection is still important because it allows:

  • Direct visual assessment of internal surfaces
  • Identification of corrosion, deposits, or contamination
  • Evaluation of conditions that may not be fully detected by NDT
  • Verification of cleaning, maintenance, and internal fittings

Uniquo follows a combined approach where NDT is used to support and enhance inspection findings, but it does not replace the need for internal inspection where it is required.
Together, these methods provide a more complete understanding of vessel condition, helping organizations ensure safety, compliance, and reliable long-term operation.
