Question 09

What is a Fitness for Service (FFS) assessment?

A Fitness for Service (FFS) assessment is a detailed engineering evaluation used to determine whether a pressure vessel can continue to operate safely despite the presence of defects, damage, or degradation such as corrosion, cracks, or thinning.
In India, FFS assessments are widely used in industries like oil & gas, petrochemicals, chemicals, power plants, and manufacturing to support safe decision-making and compliance with the Factories Act, 1948 and applicable state factory regulations.

An FFS assessment typically evaluates:

  • Extent and severity of observed defects
  • Remaining wall thickness and corrosion levels
  • Operating conditions such as pressure and temperature
  • Material properties and design specifications
  • Safety margins and risk of failure

The purpose of an FFS assessment is to decide whether the equipment can:

  • Continue to operate safely with the existing damage
  • Require temporary operation limits or monitoring
  • Need repair or replacement before further use

Uniquo supports FFS assessments through detailed inspection data, defect analysis, and risk-based recommendations. This helps organizations make informed decisions, avoid unexpected failures, and ensure safe and compliant operation of pressure vessels.
