Question 09

What are the common scaffold defects found during inspection?

Common scaffold defects found during inspection typically relate to improper assembly, wear and tear, or unsafe usage practices.

In the Indian construction and industrial context, some of the most frequent issues include loose or missing couplers and fittings, inadequate bracing, and unstable or uneven base support due to poor ground conditions or missing base plates and sole boards. Incorrect installation of platforms, such as unsecured or damaged decking, is also commonly observed.

Other defects include missing or improperly placed guardrails, mid-rails, and toe boards, which increase the risk of falls. Overloading of scaffolds beyond their designed capacity, corrosion or damage to components, and use of incompatible or mixed scaffold systems are also significant safety concerns.

Unsafe access arrangements, such as poorly secured ladders or missing entry points, and unauthorized modifications made without proper approval are additional issues often identified during inspections.
