What is the difference between calibration and verification?
Calibration is the process of comparing an instrument’s measurements against known reference standards and adjusting the instrument if necessary to improve accuracy. Calibration also provides documented results showing measurement deviations and uncertainty. In India, calibration is typically performed following guidelines from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and standards like ISO/IEC 17025.
Verification, on the other hand, is a simpler check to confirm
that an instrument is performing within acceptable limits. It does
not usually involve adjustments or detailed calibration data.
Verification is often performed between calibration intervals as a
routine quality check.
Key Differences:
- Calibration: Detailed comparison, adjustment (if required), and calibration certificate
- Verification: Quick performance check without adjustment
- Calibration: Conducted periodically by qualified professionals
- Verification: Often performed in-house for routine checks
Both calibration and verification help maintain measurement accuracy, support compliance, and ensure reliable operational performance across industrial and safety applications.
