What is a proof load test?
A proof load test is a type of load testing in which equipment or structures are subjected to a load higher than their Safe Working Load (SWL) to verify their strength, stability, and structural integrity. This test ensures that the equipment can safely handle loads beyond normal operating conditions without permanent deformation or failure.
Proof load testing is commonly conducted on cranes, hoists,
lifting beams, lifting tools, platforms, structures, and material
handling equipment before they are put into service or after major
repairs.
In India, proof load testing is typically carried out as per
requirements under the Factories Act, 1948 and applicable State
Factory Rules monitored by the Directorate of Industrial Safety
and Health. Testing must be performed by a Competent Person to
ensure compliance and safety.
When is Proof Load Testing Conducted?
- Before commissioning new equipment
- After installation or relocation
- After repair or modification
- During periodic statutory inspections
- When equipment safety is in question
Proof load testing helps confirm load capacity, identify structural weaknesses, and ensure safe operation.
At Uniquo, proof load testing is conducted using calibrated equipment by competent professionals in accordance with Indian safety standards and regulatory requirements.
