Question 03

What is a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR)?

A Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) is a documented record that proves a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is capable of producing sound and acceptable welds under defined conditions.

It is prepared by actually welding a test coupon using the specified welding parameters mentioned in the WPS, followed by laboratory testing. These tests may include tensile testing, bend testing, impact testing, and other mechanical or non-destructive examinations, depending on the applicable code requirements.

In the Indian industrial context, PQRs are essential in industries such as oil & gas, power plants, fabrication, construction, and heavy engineering to ensure weld quality and compliance with standards like ASME Section IX, AWS codes, and Indian Standards (IS).

The PQR contains detailed test results and confirms that the welding procedure is capable of producing welds with the required mechanical strength and integrity.

At Uniquo, we support clients by conducting necessary testing and documentation to help establish and validate PQRs as part of welding procedure qualification and quality assurance processes.
