Question 02

What standards govern scaffold inspection in India?

In India, scaffold inspection and safety practices are primarily guided by the Indian Standard IS 3696 (Code of Safety for Scaffolds and Ladders) along with general provisions under the Factories Act, 1948, and applicable rules framed by State Labour Departments.

IS 3696 provides detailed guidelines for the safe erection, use, maintenance, and dismantling of scaffolding. It covers key safety aspects such as structural stability, load-bearing capacity, bracing, platform width, access provisions, and protection against falling objects.

In addition to IS 3696, good engineering practices and international standards (such as OSHA guidelines, where applicable in industrial projects) are often referenced by companies in India, especially in large construction, oil & gas, and infrastructure projects.

Regular scaffold inspection is expected to be carried out by a competent person before use, after any modification, and at periodic intervals to ensure compliance with safety requirements and to prevent structural failures or accidents on site.
