Question 01

What are lifting tools and pressure vessel testing?

Lifting Tools and Pressure Vessel Testing refers to a set of mandatory inspection and certification services required under Indian safety regulations to ensure that industrial equipment is structurally sound and safe to operate. Lifting Tools Testing covers the inspection and load testing of equipment used to lift, hoist, or suspend heavy loads — such as:

  • Chain pulley blocks and hoists
  • Wire ropes, slings, and shackles
  • EOT (Electric Overhead Travel) cranes and gantry cranes
  • Hydraulic jacks and lifting beams
  • D-shackles, eye bolts, and hooks

What the testing usually covers

These tools are tested under controlled conditions — typically at 1.25× to 2× their Safe Working Load (SWL) — to verify they can handle actual operational demands without failure. In India, this testing is governed by the Factories Act, 1948, various State Factory Rules, and guidelines from the Directorate General Factory Advice Service & Labour Institutes (DGFASLI). Pressure Vessel Testing involves the inspection and hydraulic/pneumatic testing of closed containers that hold gases or liquids at pressures significantly above atmospheric levels. This includes:

  • Air receivers and compressed air tanks
  • Steam boilers and heat exchangers
  • Storage bullets and LPG/LNG vessels
  • Autoclaves and reactors
  • Hydraulic cylinders and accumulators

These vessels are tested to detect cracks, corrosion, thinning of walls, or weld defects that could lead to catastrophic failure. In India, this is regulated under the Indian Boilers Act, 1923, IBR (Indian Boiler Regulations), and the Static and Mobile Pressure Vessels (Unfired) Rules, 1981.

Why is this testing mandatory in India?

Under Indian law, factories and industrial units are required to maintain valid test certificates for all lifting equipment and pressure vessels. Regular testing — typically every 12 months for lifting tools — is necessary to legally operate the equipment and to remain compliant during inspections by the Factory Inspector or Chief Inspector of Factories under respective State authorities.

At Uniquo, our certified testing engineers conduct on-site or lab-based evaluations, issue legally valid test certificates, and help your facility stay fully compliant with all applicable Indian safety standards — protecting your workforce, your assets, and your business continuity.
