Question 05

What is the difference between a noise survey and a noise dose assessment?

A noise survey and a noise dose assessment are both used to evaluate occupational noise exposure, but they differ in scope and method of measurement.

A noise survey is a general assessment of noise levels across a workplace or site. It involves measuring sound levels at different locations using a sound level meter to identify high-noise areas, map noise distribution, and understand overall environmental noise conditions. In the Indian industrial context, noise surveys are commonly used in factories, construction sites, power plants, and other industrial facilities for identifying noise zones and planning control measures.

A noise dose assessment, on the other hand, focuses on an individual worker’s exposure to noise over a specific period. It is carried out using a noise dosimeter worn by the worker, which records the total noise exposure during their shift. This method helps determine whether a worker’s personal exposure exceeds permissible limits defined under occupational safety guidelines.

In simple terms, a noise survey measures area-based noise levels, while a noise dose assessment measures personal exposure over time.

At Uniquo, we provide both types of assessments to help industries across India ensure worker safety, regulatory compliance, and effective noise control planning.
