What noise levels are permissible in Indian workplaces?
In India, permissible occupational noise exposure levels are defined under workplace safety regulations and are generally based on exposure duration and sound intensity measured in decibels (dB).
As per commonly followed standards in industrial safety guidelines:
- A continuous exposure of 85 dB(A) for 8 hours per day is typically considered the maximum permissible limit for industrial workers.
- As noise levels increase, the allowable exposure time decreases (for example, higher noise levels require shorter exposure durations to prevent hearing damage).
- Peak or impulse noise levels should also be controlled to avoid sudden harmful exposure.
In industrial environments such as manufacturing plants, construction sites, power stations, and mining operations across India, maintaining noise levels within these limits is essential to protect worker hearing health and ensure compliance with occupational safety requirements.
If noise levels exceed permissible limits, corrective measures such as engineering controls, administrative controls, or personal protective equipment (PPE) like earplugs and earmuffs must be implemented.
At Uniquo, we assess workplace noise levels in line with applicable Indian occupational safety guidelines and international standards to help industries maintain safe and compliant working environments.
