Question 08

What is Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT)?

Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT), also known as Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT), is a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method used to detect surface cracks, porosity, and defects in non-porous materials. This method involves applying a liquid dye to the surface of the component, allowing it to penetrate into defects, and then using a developer to make the flaws visible.

Liquid Penetrant Testing is commonly used for inspecting:

  • Weld joints and fabricated structures
  • Lifting tools and accessories
  • Pressure vessels and tanks
  • Structural components and machinery parts
  • Non-magnetic materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, and alloys

When is LPT Used?
  • During periodic inspections
  • After welding or fabrication work
  • When surface cracks or defects are suspected
  • During preventive maintenance
  • Before commissioning critical equipment

In India, Liquid Penetrant Testing is conducted in accordance with requirements under the Factories Act, 1948, standards from the Bureau of Indian Standards, and guidelines from the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health.

LPT helps detect surface-level defects early, ensuring equipment safety, reliability, and compliance. At Uniquo, Liquid Penetrant Testing is performed by trained professionals using approved procedures for accurate and dependable results.
