Question 13

What is a bend test for welds?

A bend test is a type of destructive welding test used to evaluate the ductility, soundness, and integrity of a welded joint. It helps determine whether the weld can withstand bending without cracking or showing internal defects.

In this test, a welded specimen is bent to a specified angle using a guided or free-bend method. The test is performed on different sections of the weld, such as the root bend, face bend, or side bend, depending on the applicable code requirements.

During bending, the weld surface is carefully examined for any signs of cracks, voids, lack of fusion, or other discontinuities. If no significant defects are observed after bending, the weld is considered acceptable.

In the Indian industrial context, bend tests are commonly conducted as part of welder qualification and procedure qualification as per standards such as IS codes, ASME Section IX, and AWS specifications, especially in industries like fabrication, construction, oil & gas, and power plants.

At Uniquo, we perform bend testing in accordance with relevant standards to ensure weld quality, reliability, and compliance for critical industrial applications across India.
