What is a Welding Procedure Specification (WPS)?
A Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is a formal document that provides detailed instructions on how a specific weld should be performed to ensure consistent quality, strength, and compliance with required standards.
It includes essential parameters such as the welding process to be used, type of base and filler materials, joint design, welding position, preheating and post-weld heat treatment requirements, current and voltage settings, and other critical process variables.
In the Indian industrial context, a WPS is widely used in sectors like construction, oil & gas, power plants, fabrication, and heavy engineering to ensure that welding work meets quality and safety standards as per codes such as ASME, AWS, and Indian Standards (IS).
A properly qualified WPS helps ensure that welds are repeatable, reliable, and suitable for their intended application. It is typically supported by a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR), which validates the procedure through testing.
At Uniquo, we assist clients in reviewing and ensuring compliance of WPS documentation as part of overall welding quality assurance and inspection services.
