What is the validity of a welder qualification certificate?

The validity of a welder qualification certificate depends on the code or standard under which the welder has been qualified, such as IS codes, ASME Section IX, AWS standards, or specific project requirements.

In most cases followed in India:

  • Under ASME Section IX, a welder qualification remains valid as long as the welder continues to use the qualified welding process regularly (typically within a 6-month period) without any significant break in work. If there is a prolonged discontinuity, requalification may be required.
  • Under certain Indian Standards (IS codes) and project specifications, validity may range from 6 months to 2 years, subject to periodic performance verification.
  • Many EPC contractors and clients in India also require annual or periodic revalidation based on internal quality requirements.

If a welder does not work with the qualified process for a specified period, or if there is doubt about performance quality, requalification is required to ensure continued compliance.
